Start with Praise

Start with Praise

This message is based on the first sentence of The Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” The thrust of the message is to challenge us to start our prayers with praise to God as our Father and our King.

At the conclusion I challenged all of us to begin using our prayer journals by writing out our prayers around the acrostic “ACTS”:

  • Adoration of God for who he is
  • Confession of any known sins
  • Thanksgiving for blessings God has given us
  • Supplication by presenting our requests to God

As you pray this week in your ‘private prayer place’, take a few minutes on each of the four areas and write down your thoughts as a prayer to God.

Adoration: “God, I praise you because you are…”

Below is a list of some of the names, attributes and descriptions of God found in the Bible to help you focus on some of God’s character and to praise him for:

  • He is the Creator
  • He is the Good Shepherd
  • He is our Father
  • He is love
  • He is holy
  • He is just
  • He is good
  • He is all-powerful
  • He is all-knowing
  • He is present everywhere
  • He is patient
  • He is kind
  • He is sovereign
  • He is unchangeable
  • He is jealous
  • He is a God of grace
  • He is compassionate
  • He is a God who heals
  • He is faithful
  • He is a God of truth
  • He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords
  • He is Alpha and Omega
  • He is eternal
  • He is light
  • He is Savior
  • He is Lord
  • He is the Great Physician
  • He is our Defender
  • He is our refuge and strength
  • He is our guide

Confession: “God, I confess the sin of _______.” (pause here for a few moments to allow the Holy Spirit to point out anything he sees in your life that needs to be confessed such as anger, envy, pride, lust, worry, etc.)

Thanksgiving: “God thank you for ___________.” (List some of the many blessings you have in your life, whether that is relational, material, spiritual. We have much to be thankful for!)

Supplication: “God I want to pray for __________.” (This is where you ask God specifically for the requests you have on your behalf, on behalf of your children, your spouse, friends, unsaved co-workers or friends, concerns around the world, etc.)

In my message I asked us all to specifically pray for the situation in Syria. If you want to contribute, here are two ways you can.

I hope this helps you grow in your prayer experience!
