When we look in the Word and think of interactions with God, “terrifying” is not a word we often think of to describe an encounter. But, that is exactly how people like Isaiah, Paul, and John would describe coming into contact with the God of heaven!
The characteristic that is at the foundation God is Holiness. Holiness is pure righteousness and the complete absence of sin. In fact, God is so holy that Jews would not even say or write His personal name, Yahweh. In writing, they would only use YHWHand in your Bible you see this personal name appear as LORD (all caps or lower case caps).
Because God is holy, we are to pursue holiness in our lives (1 Peter 1:13-16). We talked about two ways to do that:
1. Confess – “Sin” isn’t a word we like to use. If we say, “I messed up” it doesn’t sound nearly as bad as “sin”. We have to put a name to our sin: Anger, Lust, Greed, Deceit, Pride, and the list goes on. We must be willing to say our sin out loud and share it with some people close to us.
2. Conform – In order to fully repent (reconsider/think differently) we need to look to Jesus as our model for living. Andy Stanley has said, “If you want to know what Jesus meant by what Jesus said, then you need to look at what Jesus did.”.
Two suggestions for helping you conform:
Read, Study, & Apply His Word
Connect with others (Community Groups, What’s Next)
God is Holy and our response is to live holy lives. Living holy lives is a constant struggle, constant effort, and constant choice we make.
Right now in the presence of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit the angels are crying, “Holy, Holy, Holy!”.
It is a cry we must choose to echo every day.
