Message Resources – Wisdom: Wise and Unwise Words

Message Resources – Wisdom: Wise and Unwise Words

Here are the verses I used in the message on the power of our words.

Proverbs 18:21 – “The tongue can bring death or life.”

Words that deliver death:

Gossip

  • Proverbs 11:13 – ” A gossip goes round telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.”
  • Proverbs 16:28 – “Gossip separates the closest of friends.”
  • Proverbs 21:23 – “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.”

Destructive criticism

  • Proverbs 12:18 – “Some people make cutting remarks but the words of the wise bring healing.”
  • Proverbs 18:14 – “The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?”
  • Proverbs 13:3 – “Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.”

Words That Deliver Life:

Encouragement

  • Proverbs 12:25 – “Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging words cheers a person up.”
  • Proverbs 15:4 – “Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
  • Proverbs 16:24 – “Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.”

Constructive criticism

  • Proverbs 9:8 – “So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise and they will love you.”
  • Proverbs15:31 – “If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise.”

Challenge:

  • Don’t gossip and don’t lash out with destructive criticism. Give plenty of encouragement and if necessary, offer criticism that is constructive to the person.
  • Memorize Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue can bring death or life.”
